Are you overwhelmed and want to know how to declutter you home? In this post, we will talk about the whys and hows of decluttering your home before your next move.
What happens if you don’t declutter? We see this all the time during our moves. People throw everything into contractor bags. Things get damaged in those bags, and at the end of the day, you still need to deal with them when you unpack.
The whys:
- Saves money. Having less items means you will need to move less things. And fewer boxes for us movers means less time and truck space we will need to complete the move.
- Reduce stress. Seeing a ton of items in the closet is stressful. You just don’t know where to start. Combine that with moving them to your new home and everything becomes stressful.
- Sell or give away items. Sometimes you cannot carry the item to your new home. Can you keep your punching bag when you move from a house to a condo? It’s best to find a new home for the item instead of throwing it away.
The hows:
- Preparation. Find or create an empty space for trash, basement or garage would often be a good choice. Buy contractor bags for items you will throw out. Buy some storage boxes to pick and organize your items.
- One room at a time. It’s a better idea to declutter one room at a time. Not only it will create new storage spaces for your boxes, but it’s more mentally encouraging to see progress.
- Use the “how long have I not touch this item” method. If you haven’t touch the item for the pass year, do you really need it? Maybe it’s time to say good bye to those VGA cables!
- Sell or give away items. Budget plenty of time for this. It’s not always easy to find time to pick up a bulky item from your home
Remember to start as early as you can. The more time you have, the less stressful it becomes. Good luck!
