We get it—moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t need to be. Most of us don’t have the necessary experience to plan a move. In this post, we will provide you with a simple checklist of what’s involved for your next move.
6 Weeks Before Moving
Ideally, you should plan six weeks in advance before moving. You should:
- Gather moving supplies. This includes boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers. For plastic moving boxes, they should be nestable when empty (to save space) and stackable with the lid on. Transparent boxes are helpful if you decide to put items in storage—it will be easier to locate something without opening all the boxes.
- Decluttering. Sort out the items you want to keep. Remember, throwing out items you don’t need is part of the decluttering process.
- Find a local moving company. Research local moving companies. First, find a moving company that provides the services you need. Do you need someone to wrap your expensive furniture? What about your piano? Once you decide what you need, go online and look for local moving companies that provide these services.
4 Weeks Before Moving
- Packing non-essentials. We understand that everything seems essential, but keep in mind that during your move, your lifestyle will be affected. Can you live without your DVD collection for a few weeks? Or stop baking for a while and pack your baking wares first? The more you pack now, the less you will need to pack on moving day. If you have transparent boxes, you can always retrieve the items you need even after packing them.
- Update your address and mail forwarding at Canada Post. You should update your addresses. This, of course, is easier said than done, most people forget to update all their contacts. Obviously, the most important ones are:
- Government of Canada
- Driver’s license
- Banks
- Telecommunications (Rogers, Bell, etc.)
- Insurance
But what about all the ones you missed? We recommend using mail forwarding services at Canada Post. You can slowly update the ones you missed once you move into your new home.
- Schedule an elevator. If you live in a condo or apartment, you should schedule an elevator for the move. This will speed up your move instead of waiting for an elevator.
Moving Week
- Confirm details with movers. The moving company should reach out by now. Confirm the appointment.
- Pack your essentials. It’s time to pack your essentials, including toiletries, clothes, and basic kitchen supplies.
- Clear a pathway for movers. It will speed up your move and save you money if you keep a clear pathway for the movers. Remember, your movers are charging by the hour.
That’s it! Remember, moving can be stressful, but having a plan can help alleviate the stress.
Good luck on your next move!
